Understanding Fencing Rules Under the Auckland Unitary Plan (AUP)

While the AUP isn’t new, we’ve recently received a number of enquiries about how the Auckland Unitary Plan (AUP) affects fencing projects across the Auckland region.

To make things easier, we’ve put together a quick guide to help you understand the key considerations.

What is the Auckland Unitary Plan?

The AUP is Auckland Council’s planning document that regulates land use and development across the city. It includes specific rules that may impact your fencing project depending on your property’s zone and any overlay areas.

Key Considerations

  • Fence Height: Fences up to 2.5 metres high do not require building consent. Anything taller will need consent

  • Zoning Rules: Each zone - broadly segmented into residential, business, rural, and open space - has its own guidelines for fence height, design, and placement.

  • Overlay Areas: Properties in special character, heritage, coastal, or ecological zones may face additional restrictions to preserve visual, historical, or environmental values.

  • Boundary Fences: It’s recommended to discuss plans with neighbours before construction.

  • Swimming Pool Fences: These must meet specific safety standards and require consent

Why You Should Contact Auckland Council

Due to the multitude of possible requirements across Auckland, we strongly encourage you to contact Auckland Council directly to confirm what is permitted for your specific property and zone. They can provide authoritative, tailored advice to ensure your project complies with all relevant regulations.

You can find more detailed information and access the AUP directly on the Auckland Council Website
