Retrofitting a PS1‑Compliant 358 Anti-Climb Mesh Pool Fence at Kaikohe Intermediate School
While much of the country enjoyed a well‑earned summer break, the Hampden team was hard at work delivering secure perimeter solutions across Aotearoa.
One standout project was the design, fabrication and installation of a new PS1‑compliant pool fence for Kaikohe Intermediate School in Northland.
NZ Architectural Design Studio reached out needing a compliant, anti-climb, and high‑visibility solution that could adapt to a pre‑existing foundation on site. With our experience in secure perimeters and complex retrofit applications, Hampden were able to provide the solution they were looking for.
The result is a robust, fully compliant, and secure pool perimeter that will serve the school and its community for many years to come.
Understanding the Challenge
Kaikohe Intermediate’s existing pool fence had reached the end of its life and required a modern, fully compliant replacement. The new solution needed to integrate with a pre‑existing pool structure, maintain high visibility for supervision, and prevent any opportunistic swimmers from accessing the pool when the gates were closed.
Collaborative Design & Engineering
After confirming design requirements with NZ Architectural Design Studio, and to ensure the new pool enclosure met all requirements under the Building Code, we worked with structural engineering specialists BGT. Together, we established the design parameters needed to achieve PS1 compliance, ensuring the fence could withstand environmental loads, meet pool barrier regulations, and deliver long‑term durability.
Our team carried out detailed site assessments and measurements early in the project to ensure every aspect was understood correctly - especially important given the school’s location and the time‑critical nature of the delivery.
A Robust, Secure Solution
Hampden designed, fabricated, and installed the new pool perimeter using Hampden’s 358 Anti‑Climb Mesh Fence System, a proven system known for its anti-climb properties, tamper‑resistance, and exceptional visibility. The result is a modern, low‑maintenance pool enclosure that significantly enhances safety for students and staff.
Delivering Through Extreme Weather
In true Northland fashion, January brought with it a severe weather bomb - flooding, high winds, and relentless rain. Despite these challenges, our installation team pushed through, ensuring the project was completed on schedule and ready before students returned for the 2026 school year.
Their commitment meant the school could open its pool area with confidence, knowing it now met the highest standards of safety and compliance.
A Long‑Term Investment in School Safety
The completed project provides Kaikohe Intermediate with a robust, future‑proof fencing system that will serve the school community for many years to come.
